Environments such as our Roman City or the World War I trench system can be used for literature lessons. For instance, pupils can use the trenches to set the atmosphere while listening to poetry from Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. This greatly enhances the spoken word and provides students with a better understanding of the origins of literature. Radios can be played which will involve the participant in radio broadcasts and music from the period.
The viewer can be part of the crowd while famous speeches are heard and can use this experience to discuss the various aspects of the speech. Students can see how language has changed overtime and experience the power of the spoken word.
